Three platforms (among others) for genetic medicine have become available in recent years. The adeno-associated virus (AAV), nanolipoprotein particles (NLP’s) and the Nissle E coli chassis.

All three platforms are programmable, the first two via plasmids like the Nanoplasmid from NTC and the last through general reprogramming of the E coli genome.

With the availability of these standardized programmable platforms for genetic medicines it has become feasible to focus on the software of gene programming, rather than the details of the optimization of the wetware.

The age of programmable biology has begun.
